On Friday, Dec. 7, you can enjoy some holiday cheer at Penn Brewery on the North Side.

As 7 p.m. sharp, Father Christmas himself is once again to tap the the season's first keg of St. Nikolaus Bock Brewer's Reserve.

You also can try Penn's Nut Roll Ale, a winter ale spiced and flavored to taste like the  Pittsburghy pastry.

I haven't yet tried a Nut Roll Ale, but plan to and will blog about it.

St. Nik is one of my favorite holiday beers and favorite beers, period. I had my first one of this season last night and it was delicious.

The Brewer's Reserve is a higher-alcohol version -- about 9 percent by volume (the regular St. Nik is about 6.5 percent ABV). Brewer Andrew Rich says they "boost the holiday cheer" and sweetness by adding honey.

Santa better not drink too much of the high-test stuff, because from noon to 2 p.m. the next day, Dec. 8, he's hosting a lunch at the brewery, along with the Pirate Parrot and the Penguins' Iceburgh.

Reserve for lunch by calling 412-237-9400, ext. 120.
