Two new spaces for tasting beer are to open this week.
Rivertowne Brewing Co. is on Tuesday, Dec. 18, holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony and VIP reception to mark the opening of its new production brewery in Murrysville. The huge new space -- the former the former Universal Welding building at 5578 Old William Penn Highway -- includes a tasting room.
Spokeswoman Megan Emanuel says the room will be open to the public beginning Wednesday, Dec. 19. Hours will be 4 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Customers can buy cases and kegs of beer and retail items, as well as drafts to drink in the seating area, with some light food. Tours of the brewery can be made by appointment.
Also opening this week is the taproom of the Draai Laag Brewing Co. , which for about a year quietly has been making and selling beers from a Millvale storefront at 501 E. Ohio St. On Thursday, Dec. 20, it will unveil Saints & Turncoats, what looks from its website photos to be a lovely pubby place for sampling not just the brewery's lineup but also "a number of unique offerings that are not on tap anywhere else." Draai Laag suggests looking for updates on its Twitter and Facebook and website, which lists what's on top now as:
This week and next, holiday hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 1 to 10 p.m. Saturday (this Saturday, its "Beers for Books!" promotion will be donating a portion of sale to beer to the Millvale Public Librarr). Sean Monaghan says, "After the new year we will be open Thursday and Fridays only."
Earlier this month, Scott Smith held the private (for investors) opening party for his new East End Brewing Co. at 147 Julius St. in Larimer, which also includes a cozy new room with a bar
and taps for filling glass "growlers."
Its "Growler Hours" are 4 to 8 p.m. Tues. through Friday, noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
Other new brewing spaces in the works also are planning taprooms or pubs, includining Beaver Brewing Co. in Beaver Falls, Butler Brew Works in Butler, and Shu Brewing in Zelienople.
